The path leaves the edge of the plains and dives back into the forest. The leaves grow darker, and less dust swirls around you. You start to ascend what seems to be a hill, and the path winds around boulders and rocky outcroppings. The terrain gradually becomes steeper, and the trees are thinning out. You glance up from the ground and realize that what you're ascending is more than just a little hill. The view ahead is soon blocked by a large, reddish-brown boulder, and you concentrate on the uneven ground as you detour around the rock. Pebbles and such cause you to trip now and then, and you'd rather not find your face in the dirt, especially knowing that there's probably some creature hanging around here. As soon as you're on the other side of red boulder, you look up, and find that off to the side of the path is a little cave! The sun shines brightly into it, reflecting off of the earthy-hued stone. It seems to be reflecting rather oddly in one place... wait a minute! Part of what you'd thought was stone raises itself from the ground, where it had been basking. It walks out to inspect you. |
"Welcome, wanderer." The creature has an odd accent to his voice, and eyes you. You tell him your name, and he nods, still watching you rather closely. "Have you a purpose for being here, or are you just passing through?" You tell him that you are simply walking the path, and he seems to relax a bit, though not completely. "Very well. I am Tamar, and my kind are known as Enka. We are mountain-dwelling equines." Well, that explains the location of his cave, you think to yourself. "Perhaps, if you wish to continue on, I can show you a way a bit easier than the path." You look down the path, and see that it gets quite a bit steeper, and there looks to be more loose rock covering it. "Come." You follow Tamar, and he leads you around small shrubs and through the rocks, until you find yourself at a more level section of the path. You thank him, and move on. A bit distrustful and cynical, but very knowledgable and quick to learn. |
